Islam and Modernism

Islam and Modernism, an exhibition of Rasheed Araeen’s selected works from the series Homecoming. This show pertains to Rasheed Araeen’s book launch that took place two months ago at VM Art Gallery.

These works reflect his take on modernity and Islamic thought, calligraphy, and Islamic art. These paintings depict the abstraction of different Arabic and Sufi words.

Rasheed Araeen (born 1935) is an artist, writer, and the founder of the art journal Third Text (London) and Third Text Asia (Karachi). As an artist, he began his journey in 1953, in Karachi, while he was studying civil engineering at the NED University. After creating some important works in Karachi, which were seminal to his later art practice, he moved to London in 1964. In 1965, Araeen pioneered minimalist sculpture in the UK. Today he is known as one of the earliest post-war Minimalist artists of Britain. His work is part of important collections such as at the Tate Modern, the Guggenheim, and the Sharjah Art Foundation. Rasheed Araeen is a leading figure in the international critical discourse. He has exhibited extensively and presented many papers globally.
