CALL FOR ISLAMIC ART

VM Art Gallery is accepting submissions for its Islamic Art show.
Deadline to apply is: 26th February 2023.

Participation Criteria:
-Applicants must be over 18 years of age.
-Applicants must be based in Pakistan.
-All artwork mediums are accepted and should only be Islamic Art.
-Applicants can submit up to 2 artworks for consideration.

Kindly submit the following data on submissions.vmart@gmail.com with “Islamic Art” as the subject line.

-Personal information (full name, address, contact number, email address).
-Artist statement (100 words).
-Artist bio (100 words).
-Artwork information (title, medium, dimensions, year).
- High resolution image of the work.

Compile the above-mentioned data in a pdf document and send it as a single attachment. Kindly submit artwork images separately in jpeg format as well.

Selected artists will be notified about the shipment process via email.

VM Art Gallery is proud to announce its 18th Emerging Talent Exhibition!

The exhibition will open on Saturday 14th January 2023 from 5pm to 9pm and continue till the 16th of February, 2023

This year’s Emerging Talent exhibition features artworks of graduates from 18 institutes across the country. In its 18th season, Emerging Talent has remained a distinctive event, catering to both seasoned and young collectors.

Emerging Talent is VM Art Gallery’s signature event and a highlight of the Gallery's curatorial calendar. Developed in 2003, the Emerging Talent Exhibition was the first of its kind, showcasing fresh graduate works from all over the country under one roof. The exhibition serves multiple purposes; it highlights different bodies of artwork, creates conversation between the different forms of pedagogy practiced in each institution, and also catapults emerging artists into the professional world of gallery exhibitions. Additionally, the exhibition provides an opportunity for gallerists, collectors, and other artists to witness the evolution of contemporary art making practices in Pakistan. Many of the graduates featured in the Emerging Talent Exhibition have gone on to have successful careers as artists.

Let There Be Night

@noreenalii

Noreen Ali’s work revives recipes of ancient aromatic spices that aid in inducing sleep and recovery from ailments of the night. Her work aims to elevate the importance of superfoods which have stood the test of time and are locally available. Spices are not just used in kitchen but are also used in pharmaceuticals, perfumery, pigments and antibiotics. Furthermore, they play an important role in the country’s economy, helping farmers and small-scale businesses to flourish.

Food and spices go beyond nutrition and health, it tells a tale of your ancestors, culture and land. The aroma of the flavours takes you back to when your grandmother rolled the Khaskhas covered ‘choormay ke ladoo’ or cardamom and nutmeg-infused ‘Monthar’ (Gramflour fudge).

Khadija S.Akhtar attempts to chase and reimagine the ephemeral joy of what once was. In jewel-toned colours, gardens grow savage, and wild flora and fauna flourish. Luminous beasts reign free. These fine feathered friends wander in the beauty of the after-hours, where skies are illuminated with stardust and sleeping Plantae awaken and celebrate the delightful chaos. Through overwhelming frenzy and fantastic interferences, be it in search of love, or arriving at a rendezvous, Akhtar underscores absence. No human presence appears to consume the glowing pomegranates or prune the riotous daisies, therefore the space appears ghostly, lost in time, as the world beyond is erased.

The visual metaphors in Mohsin Shafi’s work combine realistic portrayals of ordinary manifestations with elements of myth, to allow him the luxury of disconnection from the fallacies of authenticity. He uses unique yet mundane stories to probe the murky nooks of the pertinent human psyche in contrast with hybrids, to reconnoiter the existence of ghouls and monsters. The world of fiction that Shafi creates is the space between translation and interpretation where confusion occurs and things are forgotten and remembered as stories change.

Khadijah Rehman’s work borrows from ancient and modern family photographs to create compositions that are reminiscent of dreamscapes. Visual elements from memory and dream come together to create a patchwork of imagery. During this process, slight instances of glitches in the fabric of the narrative ensue. Each work is a nod to some aspect of human interaction and behaviour. Elements of family, love, longing, transformation, and night-time introspection remain at the forefront.

Let There Be Night

Bibi Hajra’s work experiments with the linkages of the hagiographies and discourses between Bibi Riqqaiya and her companions and the everyday conversations and practices in her shrine as it undergoes renovation.
In this particular piece, Hajra explores the title “Pak Damana” as a state of being that is veiled. She explores a mood that descends on the space of Bibi’s shrine, as the sun sets and the moon rises; a sense of enclosure is manifested by the elongated shadows, the darkening corners, and the huddled bodies of the devotees in the cold of the night. The sight of casually sprawled bodies preparing for storytelling and sleep is rarely witnessed in other public spaces. The space begins to transform as the darkness of the night conceals the architectural grandiosity of the shrine above and reveals the burning spectacle of various collective rituals and tales of imagined places on the ground level.

The series “Sea, Sermon, Story” expands upon Eastern genesis-era stories connected to times of turmoil, hope, and rebirth, using the story of Noah and the Ark and amalgamating it with the narration of the creation from the Bundahism.

Anushka Rustomji’s visual vocabulary is informed by ancient Eastern imagery, texts, and traditions. She utilizes the symbolism in texts and myths to form veiled visual narratives conveying ideas of creation and destruction, survival and transcendence, through which she interrogated cultural and historical connotations.

Inspired by a solo trip to the mountains of Hunza, in the Karakorum Range in Pakistan, Amber Arifeen’s work stems from the idea of freedom and its experience of it. Colour plays the role of emotional memory, giving a feeling tone to experience as remembered and allowing for a depiction of reality that is dreamlike, otherworldly, radiant, and almost psychedelic in its experience.

German artist Andreas Lutz's practice, explores communication between machine systems and people and looks at the relationship between perception and reality through sound, sign and sculpture.

Second Practice is a Pakistani collaborative research & publishing practice that looks at postcolonial geographies and participatory ways of sharing knowledge and art. Second Practice is a collaborative research practice by Fatima Hussain, Abeerah Zahid and Ayesha Kamal Khan.

Soliman Lopez from Spain is a technology artist and founder of the Harddiskmuseum, OLEA bio-cryptocurrency and the DNA-based digital entities INTRONS. Lopez researches digital material, preserving data, biology and blockchain technologies to shape his art.

KB22 is thrilled to share the innovative work of these trailblazing artists.

Engro Corp is the lead partner of the Third Karachi Biennale (KB22), which focuses on the intersection of art and technology. The Karachi Biennale 2022 will take place from October 30 to November 13 at 9 venues across the city.
