Zohreen Murtaza

Zohreen Murtaza’s experience of Hunza was informed by spatial encounters and place-lore which is defined as folklore connected with natural landscapes, sites, objects in the setting. Nature, environment, architecture and cultural landscapes become part of her visual documentation as she captures everyday life in Hassanabad village in the aftermath of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) which swept away homes located near the river. The precarity of existence vies for space with stories of resilience and adaptation in her photographs.

Melanie King Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lume

Melanie King

Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumen Studios visited four glacial sites (Passu Glacier, Shispher Glacier, Bhattura Glacier and Gulkin Glacier), each with differing properties.
Melanie King documented these areas using analogue silver gelatin film, before developing the images using a sustainable developer made from chai (tea) leaves.

Louise Beer

“From my home I look over the North Sea and watch how the mass of water draws back and forth, temporarily changing the conditions of the ecosystem with each rise and fall of the tide. As the water laps at the shoreline and waves crash onto beaches and coastlines I know around the world, I think about how old the water is that fills our puddles, glaciers, seas, and oceans. This precious entity which supports all different forms of life, in every part of the world flows in an Earth-Sized system. Our atmosphere hangs heavy with water vapour, and glaciers move slowly down the mountains, sculpting the lands as they go. The water inside my blood and brain has travelled down rivers and streams and crossed oceans, before residing temporarily inside my body. These same water molecules will flow through the bodies of life which will exist millions of years from now. The fragile ecological systems that have developed over billions of years are being eroded and the price is being paid by humans, animals and ecosystems across our planet.”

“With climate change now a reality, one of the greatest concerns is glacial melt contributing to rising temperatures. Ice thaw, GLOF bursts, and the flood of rivers are the new normal. However, unlike the other poles, in the peaks up of the Third Pole exists a state that is known as the Karakoram Anomaly. As the name implies, unlike the norm, the glaciers of the peaks of the Karakoram advance rather then recede.

Jerab advance, while Ghulkin, Batura and Hisper amongst many others retreat. To the unsuspecting eye, the glaciers rest in space while residents continue their lives as before. However, with constant environmental interventions, their state may be changing faster than ever anticipated before. Would we call this advance the natural March of a living creature, or is this forced intervention brought about by human hands?”

Saulat Ajmal uses fluidity to develop her visual vocabulary by borrowing freely from both Eastern and Western art historical narratives and traditions. VM Art Gallery is proud to present “Glacial Move

VM Art Gallery is proud to present “Glacial Movements and the Ghaib (Unseen)”
an upcoming exhibition by the Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumens Studio. This exhibition explores the history and politics of water bodies, flow of water, fluidity, bodies blocking water, and bodies moving along water. This unique exhibition will open Saturday, March 4th from 5pm to 8pm and will continue till March 24th.

The Club's project aims to showcase the precarity and beauty of living with large natural formations such as glaciers. The exhibition space will feature an experimental and experiential display of the works produced during fieldwork, including journals, videos, sounds, photography, and paintings. Each individual artist's work will be viewable on a website that is currently being produced. The gallery will become a site to launch the website and to view the works.

This project is funded by New Perspectives 75 Years of Pakistan/Uk British Council and was triggered from an invitation to a new commission at the Lahore Biennale.

VM Art Gallery, in collaboration with Grosvenor Gallery, London, cordially invites you to the book launch of "Islam and Modernism" by Rasheed Araeen on Saturday, 25th February 2023 from 3pm- 5pm. The launch event will feature a conversation with the author, Rasheed Araeen, in discussion with Amra Ali, Nafisa Rizvi and Rahat Saeed.

"Islam and Modernism" challenges the prevailing theories of modern art, which are Eurocentric and do not take into account the unique perspective of Islam. The book explores the idea that art from the Muslim world can authentically express the spirit of Islam while also being modern. It also argues that the Muslim world needs to establish its own institutions to develop and promote scholarship in art, based on its own understanding of history and values.

This event promises to be an enlightening and thought-provoking program that art lovers, students, and anyone interested in the intersection of art, culture, and religion will find fascinating.

This year’s Emerging Talent exhibition features artworks of graduates from 18 institutes across the country. In its 18th season, Emerging Talent has remained a distinctive event, catering to both seasoned and young collectors.

Emerging Talent is VM Art Gallery’s signature event and a highlight of the Gallery's curatorial calendar. Developed in 2003, the Emerging Talent Exhibition was the first of its kind, showcasing fresh graduate works from all over the country under one roof. The exhibition serves multiple purposes; it highlights different bodies of artwork, creates conversation between the different forms of pedagogy practiced in each institution, and also catapults emerging artists into the professional world of gallery exhibitions. Additionally, the exhibition provides an opportunity for gallerists, collectors, and other artists to witness the evolution of contemporary art making practices in Pakistan. Many of the graduates featured in the Emerging Talent Exhibition have gone on to have successful careers as artists.

Let There Be Night

@noreenalii

Noreen Ali’s work revives recipes of ancient aromatic spices that aid in inducing sleep and recovery from ailments of the night. Her work aims to elevate the importance of superfoods which have stood the test of time and are locally available. Spices are not just used in kitchen but are also used in pharmaceuticals, perfumery, pigments and antibiotics. Furthermore, they play an important role in the country’s economy, helping farmers and small-scale businesses to flourish.

Food and spices go beyond nutrition and health, it tells a tale of your ancestors, culture and land. The aroma of the flavours takes you back to when your grandmother rolled the Khaskhas covered ‘choormay ke ladoo’ or cardamom and nutmeg-infused ‘Monthar’ (Gramflour fudge).

The show is up to be viewed till tomorrow i.e the 31st of December, 11am to 7pm.
